Magnetic Helicity Fluxes from Triple Correlators

چکیده

Abstract Fluxes of the magnetic helicity density play an important role in large-scale turbulent dynamos, allowing growth fields while overcoming catastrophic quenching. We show here, analytically, how several types fluxes can arise from terms involving triple correlators fluctuating evolution equation. For this, we assume incompressibility and weak inhomogeneity, use a quasi-normal closure approximation: fourth-order are replaced by products second-order ones, effect cumulants on third moments is modeled strong damping term. First, diffusive flux, until now only measured simulations, arises correlation This accompanied what refer to as random advective flux , which predominantly transports along gradients fields. also find that new contribution, some aspects similar first proposed Vishniac, correlator. contribution depends kinetic energies vorticity, thus any rotating, stratified system, even if turbulence non-helical. It source dynamo itself spatially transporting within system.

Magnetic helicity fluxes in αΩ dynamos

In turbulent dynamos the production of large-scale magnetic fields is accompanied by a separation of magnetic helicity in scale. The largeand small-scale parts increase in magnitude. The small-scale part can eventually work against the dynamo and quench it, especially at high magnetic Reynolds numbers. A one-dimensional mean-field model of a dynamo is presented where diffusive magnetic helicity...

Magnetic helicity fluxes in interface and flux transport dynamos

Context. Dynamos in the Sun and other bodies tend to produce magnetic fields that possess magnetic helicity of opposite sign at large and small scales, respectively. The build-up of magnetic helicity at small scales provides an important saturation mechanism. Aims. In order to understand the nature of the solar dynamo we need to understand the details of the saturation mechanism in spherical ge...

Cosmological Magnetic Fields from Primordial Helicity

Primordial magnetic fields may account for all or part of the fields observed in galaxies. We consider the evolution of the magnetic fields created by pseudoscalar effects in the early universe. Such processes can create force-free fields of maximal helicity; we show that for such a field magnetic energy inverse cascades to larger scales than it would have solely by flux freezing and cosmic exp...

Magnetic helicity fluxes in an α dynamo embedded in a halo

We present the results of simulations of forced turbulence in a slab where the mean kinetic helicity has a maximum near the mid-plane, generating gradients of magnetic helicity of both large and small-scale fields. We also study systems that have poorly conducting buffer zones away from the midplane in order to assess the effects of boundaries. The dynamical α quenching phenomenology requires t...

Magnetic Helicity Evolution

The term “dynamo” means different things to the laboratory fusion plasma and astrophysical plasma communities. To alleviate the resulting confusion and to facilitate interdisciplinary progress, we pinpoint conceptual differences and similarities between laboratory plasma dynamos and astrophysical dynamos. We can divide dynamos into three types: 1. magnetically dominated helical dynamos which su...
